December 5, 2005 - Redondo Beach, CA Historically, shopping has not been man’s favorite past time - especially during the holidays. So why is it that the number-watchers at the Galleria in Redondo Beach are seeing more men in the mall lately? It might have something to do with Andy Di Girgis and his Gourmet Cheese and Wine Market.
About 16 months ago, Andy opened his upscale wine shop, with wine bar and deli, in The Galleria, and the shop, has drawn an increasing number of men to the mall.
"Guys come in all the time and tell us, 'You're the reason I'm here," says Andy. Patron Tom Bedore says the atmosphere - and libations - make for a perfect break while he waits for his girlfriend to make the annual trek from Nordstrom to Planet Funk to Ambercrombie and Fitch.
In fact, Andy says the increase in the number of male shoppers has been so significant that bigwigs from other major-name malls in Southern California have approached him to open a shop approach information booths at other malls and ask if there's a wine bar there. According to Linda Green, marketing director for the Galleria, other malls canvass the Galleria regularly "looking for trendy ideas.: She adds, "The design of The Gourmet Cheese and Wine Market, including the location of the wine bar and deli, makes it a perfect fit for the guy waiting for his wife or girlfriend to finish shopping." Andy says he welcomes the canvassers. "We try to introduce them to our wines while they are here."
